1. TIPS FOR DRINKING WATER ON THE BIKE
 Mike Caldwell   (General Comments)
skip to next       Back to top

Drinking water on the bike sounds easy enough.... You bike along, and when you're thirsty (well actually before then), you reach down, grab your bottle and take a drink.

I am finding though that it is not as easy as it sounds!

I seem to always be biking uphill or into the wind. To grab my water bottle I usally stop pedalling for a couple of seconds to grab my bottle. I tend to lose a fair bit of momentum with those few lost pedal strokes.

Since I've lost some momentum anyway, I feel like I should maximize the water I drink which causes me to lose even more speed.

I'd love to hear if anybody has any tips or strategies for drinking on the ride. Do you wait for a downhill? Do you speed up a bit before you drink? Do you hold your bottle in your hand for a few minutes and drink a few times?

I'd also love to hear any stories of experience that relate to the water bottle.

6. JULIE C RE: WATER BOTTLE HOLDER
 Rene-Louis Bourgeau   (General Comments)
skip to next       Back to top

I have a suggestion for you regarding your water bottle holder for the rear, I have a Cannondale slice 5 and Cannondale has a cage that goes on the seat post(carbon) and not the rail, It costs 50.00 for the cage. However your bike does not have the hole to fit this bracket, however you can have someone drill the proper hole and the cage will fit, This cage does not affect the seat adjustments in any way. Email me and I will send you pictures to give you a better idea. Including the website to buy this cage. Marathoner@Rgers.com

7. MINTO RUN FOR REACH
 Rene-Louis Bourgeau   (General Comments)
skip to next       Back to top

I have done this event now for 4 years (21k) as a training event for ORW 42k, I love this event, John Stanton is there, The event is well organized, Lots of food and coffee etc. I was reading Ben's post about other runner's not doing this event and more concentrating on Race weekend, I think that like myself I prefer to run in larger groups it keeps me motivated. Smaller running events where you might be running alone I tend to slow down. Army Run and 9 run run I have better times than Minto Run because at the Minto Run I ran the last 10k almost alone. The runner's tend to distance themselves because we are fewer. This is just my opinion. The only thing I do not like about this event is that I saw cyclists and a scooter on the course (I guess they thought it was Sunday bike day) I see this every year at this event and nothing has changed. But it's still a great run. The price for this event is more than reasonable, Teck shirts are nice and course is nice. Yes I was in the 40-49 age group and came in last in my age group but I don't care. (I hurt myself in the run but finished it anyways 2:02)Will I do this event again next year? YUP!

11. TOP 10 THINGS LEARNED AT A TRI CAMP:
 Mike Burke   (General Comments)
skip to next       Back to top

1. Do not wait until you are 60 to do your first one.
2. There is no cure for a sore butt when putting in long rides, but Chamois Butter helps better than anything else. Get used to it.
3. Bike signals and rider etiquette matter. Use them, be consistent and consider the other riders in your pace line. Keep your legs moving. Always stay with your wingman.
4. Apparently the "thumb entry first" stroke has been out of favour for 20 years. Going to a flat entry stroke changes the whole set up for your pull. Will probably take me another 20 years to learn to apply the change.
5. You do not wear underpants while cycling. Took me only 10 years to discover that you do not have to get all chafed in the wrong places. How do you spell relief :)
6. Unless you are a very experienced, strong rider, you should try to bring or find someone at your own level.
7. Having a good location, with beautiful vistas, to ride real distances, with long and rolling hills, little or no traffic and very considerate drivers is a real revelation. Pinehurst, North Carolina fits that bill.
8. Having a spouse who will take on the cooking, grocery shopping, clothes washing and refreshments, especially doing sag stops while on long rides, may not be essential for young participants, but is critical for the performance, recovery, nap times and health of us older players. And they help everyone else in the house too. Thanks Kathy and Al and Lloyd and Joan.
9. People can have very different diets to support their training. You can learn as much about eating as about training with an open mind.
10. You really do have to train for a training camp. Glad I did what I did. Should have done more.

14. DENIS MOREL LIFETIME ACHIEVMENT
 Devashish Paul   (General Comments)
skip to next       Back to top

Congrats to Denis Morel on a lifetime's achievement of being selected to race at the Hawaii Ironman based on him having completed in excess of 13 Ironman branded races at the full distance of 140.6 miles!!! If I have it correct Denis has done over 20 Full Ironmans.

The Ironman legacy program was designed for athletes like Denis. Basically guys who have devoted a fair amount of energy over numerous years doing full Ironman distance events, making it an annual thing. Along the way, athletes like Denis inspire many to exercise, not because they are the fastest guys on the block, but just by their enthusiasm and energy.

Not everyone has the starting genetic potential to qualify for Kona, just like many of us may not have the right body type to be Junior hockey players or make the. High school basketball team.

WTC rightly recognizes that athletes like Denis deserve their turn to experience the magic by Kailua Pier on a Saturday in October.

Well done Denis. You deserve every step of that 140.6 mile victory lap on October in the same show as Crowie, Mirinda and Lance.

Rudy, you incorrectly mentioned that Denis was a lottery winner, which he is not...he got there on his own merit through the front door!!!

15. WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?
 Joan Hollywood   (Jokes)
skip to next       Back to top

SARAH PALIN: The chicken crossed the road because gosh-darn it,
he's a maverick!

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for
change! The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he
recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all
the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that
little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely
qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this
country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't
about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the
road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or
not.
The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground
here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see
the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken.

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I
am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled
about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against
it.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't
realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the
road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to
do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current
problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems,
which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having
the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life,
I'm going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so that he can just drive across the road
and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken,
but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the
road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You
can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken
was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs
when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any
insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a
toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not
been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road.
Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that intewesting? In a few moments, we will
be wistening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming
story of how it expewienced a sewious case of molting, and went
on to accompwish it's wifewong dweam of cwossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads
together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2010, which will not only
cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents,
and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken2010.
This new platform is much more stable and will never reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the
road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one ?

28. HALF IRON DISTANCE - OCALA, FLORIDA
 Frederick Ford   (Race Reports)
skip to next       Back to top

We just returned from a training/vacation in Florida. While we were there, I participated in a new series of triathlons called the H.I.T.S. series. They advertise a distance for everyone – from Open/Sprint to Full Iron Distance. I believe they are adding a relay for the longer distances.

The series started in California. The circuit crosses the US: California, Florida, Texas, New York, Colorado, and Arizona. They also have a couple of Triathlon camps along the way. The championships will be in California at the end of the season. They do not require that people qualify for the championships.

In fact, in terms of awards, they divide up the field in one year increments rather than the usual five years. So, everyone gets a medal, but the first in each one year category gets a plaque.

Overall, the half iron distance that I did at Ocala, Florida was very well organized. It was the inaugural race, so there were a few minor glitches.

The races are conducted in accordance with the USA Triathlon rules and regulations, so you can qualify for the USA Triathlon Championships (which I did) through this series.

With the half and full distances, you check in your bike the night before. Your position in transition is according to your race number. They have a very interesting system in transition. You have a portable stool (to sit on) and an enclosed area for your equipment.

We had 200 half and full distance competitors the day that I raced. The transition staff helped people who had forgotten equipment (by getting goggles, ear plugs, and a wheel from other helpful participants).

They had a number of participants who had followed the circuit from the beginning in California. The volunteers and full-time staff were very well chosen and they were very helpful in transition and on the race circuit.

Race day was very hot, humid and rather windy; however, I had ice at all the run stations – which was greatly appreciated. The race director (Mark Wilson) and the CEO of the series were very hands on with the participants.

The swim was in the beautiful Lake Weir, a nice sandy beach and also sandy lake bottom. We started in waist deep water. The swim was a straight out straight back. The run back to transition was sandy, also.

The bike course was quite good. We had the opportunity to see 90 km of the area; the roads were from very good to good. No problems with keeping on course, they had it marked very well and the police were at important junctions.

The run course was very good. The first 5 km was in the woods, so we were sheltered from the sun. The remainder of the run was on the road. I enjoyed having ice at all of the stations on such a hot day.

I would definitely do another race under the H.I.T.S. banner. This is a link to the series and in particular, Cooperstown, NY. http://hitstriathlonseries.com/cooperstown-ny

29. "WHERE'S FRANKTOWN?" FAST APPROACHING!
 Chris Froggatt   (Race Reports)

Hello fellow runners:

The 8th annual “Where’s Franktown?” race event is now less than a month away. Our first race in 2005 began with 155 runners and has since grown to where we hosted 525 runners in 2011. This year’s event is certainly going to be a great one and we hope that each of you can make it!

The event will take place at CCA in Franktown on Saturday, May 12, 2012 and will again feature a 15km and a 10km run as well as a 5km and 1km run or walk.

Through the race event, we will also continue to show our support for Noella Klawitter as she strives for the London2012 Paralympic Games taking place in August. Noella has become a wonderful addition to our school community and an inspiration to our students. Both Noella and CCA will greatly benefit from this continued partnership. We hope you can come out this year and show your support for Noella!

Event registration is now live at both www.eventsonline.ca and at www.runningroom.com

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Chris Froggatt
Race Director

High winds gusting to 60 km/h and late afternoon rainshowers dropped the temperature from a high of 28°C in the mid afternoon to 20° by 18:00. Luckily, those of us who weren't scared off by the elements were treated to a fine time trial night - The rain stopped, the winds slowed and the low air pressure helped us do very well for so early in the year! All riders exceeded 20km/h, even new rider Thuy Do who was on a recumbent trike, and our oldest rider Sally O'Brien, in her late sixties, on her hybrid bike. Nobody was faster than their CFCTT best of last year, but still, if you look at the average of the performance ratios shown below those results, tonight measures higher than the 2012 OBC Good Fridy Time Trial did.
